Finding your way on your first ever VPS – Part II

Finding your way on your first ever VPS – Part II

Tags: tutorials Date/Time: September 28, 2014 @ 1:00 am, by Maarten Kossen

A couple of weeks ago, I posted the 'Finding your way on your first ever VPS – Part I' tutorial. This is part 2 of that series in which I will introduce you to another couple of commands!

I am going to assume a Debian-based distribution in my examples. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 more specifically. Most commands should work on any Linux distribution; the only distribution-specific commands are those for the package manager.

Ready? Set? Let's go!

man

Last time I have already shown you what to do if you need help (type '–help' behind a command). This help can sometimes be cumbersome, even cryptic. There are cases where you need more than just a single line of text.

'man' is the man for that job. If you type 'man' followed by another command (the name of the command/application you need help with) you get to see the manual for that command. So, for example, if you need more help with the command 'cd', type:

man cd

This will open a manual viewer where you can move around with the arrow keys, HOME, END, PAGE UP, and PAGE DOWN. If you want to quit the manual, press 'q' and you will return to your terminal shell.

Almost every application has a manual, though I do have to add that a small portion of them are quite bad. I doubt you will run into one of those any time soon, though.

cp

The 'cp' command enables you to copy a file or a directory. If requires two paths and a parameter in case you would like to copy a directory. The first path is the source path, so the file or directory you want to copy. The second path is the destination path, the file or directory you want to copy it to. This does not have to exist. If the target file exists, cp will overwrite that file. If the target directory exists, cp will throw an error.

For example, to copy the file 'README.txt' to 'README-NEW.txt', type:

cp README.txt README-NEW.txt

The above assumes the README.txt file is in the directory you are currently in. cp also works will full paths, though:

cp /home/johnsmith/README.txt /home/johnsmith/README-NEW.txt

And you can even copy things to another directory:

cp /home/johnsmith/README.txt /home/johnsmith/Documents/README-NEW.txt

Finally, copying a directory requires the '-r' parameter:

cp -r /home/johnsmith/directory1 /home/johnsmith/directory2

mv

'mv' work very similarly to 'cp'. It enables you to move a file or a directory, which can also be used to rename things. If requires two paths. The first path is the source path, so the file or directory you want to move. The second path is the destination path, the file or directory you want to move it to.

For example, to move the file 'README.txt' to 'README-NEW.txt', type:

mv README.txt README-NEW.txt

The above assumes the README.txt file is in the directory you are currently in. mv also works will full paths, though:

mv /home/johnsmith/README.txt /home/johnsmith/README-NEW.txt

And you can even move things to another directory:

mv /home/johnsmith/README.txt /home/johnsmith/Documents/README-NEW.txt

But, you can also move directories:

mv /home/johnsmith/directory1 /home/johnsmith/directory2

rm

'rm' is both a helpful and a dangerous command. It allows you to remove files and directories.

WARNING – Please be very careful with this command as it will often irrevocably remove files from your system without a way to get them back. Additionally, if may damage your system in such away that it may need to be reinstalled! – WARNING

rm takes one or more arguments of files to be removed. For example, if you want to remove the README.txt file, you type:

rm README.txt

Again, this also works with a full path:

rm /home/johnsmith/README.txt

To remove a directory that is empty, just use that directory path:

rm /home/johnsmith/emptydirectory

To remove a directory and all files in it, you can use the '-r' parameter to remove files and directories recursively. You need to be very careful with this, because if you take it  level too high, you could use more files than you intended.

rm -r /home/johnsmith/nonemptydirectory

I can't emphasize this enough: please be careful with rm!

less

To view text-based files, you can use the tool 'less'. Less can basically work with any text-based file, but does not have syntax highlighting. It is especially useful for viewing log files or configuration files.

For example, to view the system's log file (more about this later), type:

less /var/log/syslog

As you can see, less takes a path as an argument and that path needs to point to a file. Within less, you can use the arrow keys, HOME, END, PAGE UP, and PAGE DOWN to move around. Type 'q' to exit.

If you want to search for something inside less, type '/' followed by the word/term you are looking for and press ENTER. This will give you the first highlighted result, if any. If there is more than one result, keep pressing ENTER until you get the desired result.

Final notes

That's it again for this part of the tutorial. You've now learned some more commands to find your way about, but also to actually do some things. Feel free to experiment further with these commands or browse through their manual pages to find out what else they can do. I've only shown a very small portion of the available options.

See you next time, in Part III!

Dmitry, from Vstoike.ru, has sent in these exclusive offers to LowEndBox. Last time we featured them it was as a surprise post and it was actually the first time we did feature them. These still are some of the cheapest offers I've seen so far in Russia. These VPS are hosted on modern hardware with Intel Xeon CPUs. All hardware and even the data center is Saint Petersburg is owned by Vstoike. They also have their own IPs and uplinks and provide 24×7 support. They have quite a comprehensive website, though it's completely in Russian so you'd need to use an online translation tool to read it if you don't speak any Russian. IPv6 comes standard with these machines. They seem to be using SolusVM as a control panel. The default port speed is 100Mbps, but it may be upgraded for a fee to either 1Gbps or 10Gbps. Please let us know if you're a customer or if you decided to try them out. Your opinion is always valued. Enjoy this offer!

Deadpool 2014 #2

Deadpool 2014 #2

Tags: deadpool Date/Time: September 26, 2014 @ 1:00 pm, by Maarten Kossen

It's time for the second deadpool post of 2014, this time featuring three hosts that have bitten the dust over the past few months. Ironically enough, one of the deadpooled providers was one that called another deadpooled provider a SCAM… Let's get cracking!

Dedicated MindsDedicated Minds

Status: Server not found/website offline/nodes offline

The minds of Dedicated Minds were not as dedicated as we anticipated when they launched. Reece Chroftes registered Dedicated Minds as a company in May 2013 together with Tyler Curtis, but Reece left as a director shortly after. The company is still active but the website is nowhere to be found. We did feature Dedicated Minds once on LowEndBox and the response were mixed judging by the comments to that post. After a period of slow responses and downtime they seem to have vanished not to be found again.

KVMVPS.us

Status: Server not found/website offline/nodes offline

KVMVPS.us was run by the eccentric Ryyan Hasan ("Sunn"), who has meanwhile been banned from LowEndTalk for acting racist against another LowEndTalk member. We have never actually featured then on LowEndBox, but they were quite active on LowEndTalk offering KVM-based VPS with a 100% uptime guarantee from New York City. It was a bumpy ride either way and it ended before it caused too much drama.

IntroNetServers

Status: Server not found/website offline/nodes offline

Criticized by KVMVPS.us owner Ryyan Hasan, IntroNetServers deadpooled somewhere in May. They offered cheap VPS from SingleHop's Amsterdam location and have made several offers on LowEndTalk. This is another host that has never been featured on LowEndBox. They offered VPS starting at $2 including a cPanel license, a free SSL certificate, and a free domain name. Needless to say, this is the least unexpected deadpool in history.

This concludes this deadpool post. If you know a host that has deadpooled, please let me know via PM on LowEndTalk.com!

Eric, from OpenVirtuals, is back with six exclusive "end of summer deals" for LowEndBox readers. There are both SSD and SSD-cached plans available in various sizes. The SSD-cached servers now pack quite some more hard drive space than last time. OpenVirtuals is a subsidiary of Intercom Online Inc (a C corporation). OpenVirtuals is active since May 2012 and they have been featured five times before on LowEndBox.com. All promotion codes are valid for three months from this post. EpiDrive – $6.95/month 1GB OpenVZ VPS in Phoenix, Arizona

Bryson, from EpiDrive, has sent in a special offer for LowEndBox readers. It is labeled as a special LEB plan, so I am assuming it's exclusive to us.

The offer

  • 2 CPU cores
  • 1GB RAM
  • 1.5GB Burst RAM
  • 30GB HDD space
  • 250GB traffic
  • 1Gbps uplink
  • 1x IPv4
  • IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • Coupon: EDVS5JQ2LEB

We know Bryson from fraphost.com, which he sold a while back because he became busy at the time. He told me this time around he isn't all by himself and is in it for the longer term. These offers run on hardware located in PhoenixNAP, which I assume is rented hardware, and the servers have an E3 CPU and hardware RAID. They get their bandwidth directly from PhoenixNAP. Please share your experiences if you give these guys a try!

PayPal is the only accepted payment method at this time, though you can use your credit card through PayPal to pay as well. Additional IPv4 addresses are priced at $3.95/month, though they are $2.45/month if you buy 5 at a time. Before you order, please read the Terms of Service!

INIZ – $19.55/year 256MB and $6.70/month 5GB OpenVZ VPS in AMS, NYC, LA

Tags: amsterdam, Iniz.com, los angeles, New York City, openvz, the Netherlands, USA Date/Time: September 18, 2014 @ 1:00 pm, by Maarten Kossen

Patrick, from INIZ, has sent the community 2 exceptional OpenVZ offers available in three locations. INIZ has been featured many times before, and reviews from users have been quite stellar throughout the life of the company. They have also achieved 3rd place in the Top Provider quarterly poll three times in a row. The nodes that the virtual servers are hosted on are quite beefy, and very generous. They consist of Dual E5-2650 CPUs, HP RAID with flash cache and 10x4TB RAID10 disks in the Netherlands, and Dual E5-2620v1/2 CPUs, LSI 9271 RAID with CV and 8x3TB RAID10 in the United States for both of their locations. A great advantage at INIZ, which we do not see every day with other providers, is the use of dual 1Gbps uplinks for redundancy at the node level. rDNS entries are easily, and instantly configured via SolusVM, eliminating the need to waste countless hours by opening a support ticket for it to be manually configured.  Unlike the majority of providers here on LowE! ndBox, only a few actually run their own BGP session. INIZ is one of the few and proud. They run their BGP (AS62599) sessions at each of their locations with the US, as well as the EU. Not to mention that they are also now a RIPE member, congratulations! All offers include 1 IPv6 address by default, a /64 IPv6 can be requested by ticket in NYC and AMS. If you are a current customer with INIZ, please do share your reviews and comments below.

Since Host1Plus have overhauled their plans, TUN/TAP, NAT, and PPP are all included free of charge. I'm still sure this is the cheapest South Africa offer we've ever seen on LowEndBox.com, the second host in it's history that features that location, and I think there's not too many competition to be expected. I think they are the only host we've featured thus far that offers a Brazil location. What makes these offer even more unique, is that it has quite some bandwidth. Yes, the port speed may be limited to 50Mbps, but 500GB or 1TB of bandwidth is still a lot for these locations. Los Angeles was recently added as a location, so people based in Asia can order from there as well to get reduced latency. Host1Plus has been doing business since 2008 and is a division of D. E. Technologies Ltd., which is a registered company in England and Wales. They have offices in London (UK), Kaunas (Lithuania), Frankfurt am Maine (Germany), and Sao Paolo (Brazil) so I have the id! ea they have quite an operation running. From my personal experience I can say these machines run just fine. I have one both in Brazil and South Africa and for the past 11 months they've had 100% uptime. If you decide to give them a try, please share your experiences with us in the comments!

HOST1PLUS accepts payments via Debit/Credit card, PayPal, AliPay, WebMoney, CashU, and Paysera. They have a refund policy which is worth reading before you order, so you know what you're up to. Their Terms of Service has a long list of prohibited content and actions, such as copyright infringing content, use of gaming servers, proxies, bots, etc. Be sure to also read their Spam Policy.

This is the first time we are featuring nanoBit. They are a registered in the UK as 'IONetwork Limited' with registration number 08830626. Their WHOIS information is not public, as I am being told that is how .pl works. The WHOIS information on ionetwork.co.uk is visible though. The host nodes have a Intel Core i7-4770 CPU, 32GB of RAM, 2x 2TB hard drives in software RAID-1, and a 1Gbps uplink. While the servers are rented right now, nanoBit may purchase servers themselves in the future and colocate those in the UK. If anyone gives these guys a shot, please share your experiences with us.

PayPal, credit cards through PayPal, and CryptoCurrencies via CoinPayments.net are all accepted as payment methods. The following things are not allowed: spam, DoS attacks, port scanning, TOR exit nodes, currency mining, any @home software, IP spoofing, booter/stresser websites, child pornography, illegal torrenting, and usenet. There's a 7-day money back guarantee which starts on the date of the first payment. Please read their full Terms of Service [PDF] and Acceptable Use Policy [PDF] before ordering.

Setup for streaming live events to browser clients using Nginx, FMLE, and FlowPlayer

Setup for streaming live events to browser clients using Nginx, FMLE, and FlowPlayer

Tags: tutorials Date/Time: September 15, 2014 @ 1:00 pm, by Jonathan Tan

Editorial note: this is Jonathan's first tutorial on LowEndBox. I hope you enjoy it and more are to follow in the future! If all goes well, he will be writing tutorials occasionally alongside me. MPK

Have you been into a situation where you wanted to stream live events such as school graduation or teaching seminar? There are already many companies offering ready made solution for such purpose. But for budget conscious people, doing it the LEB way is surely cheaper!

This tutorial will guide you step by step on how to setup and use the different components that needs to work together.

Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP)

I chose the RTMP protocol for simplicity. It was developed by Macromedia/Adobe and can be played on any machine with Adobe Flash player.

Server Setup

The server requirements is minimal:

  • Any virtualization. OpenVZ, Xen, KVM are all fine.
  • 64MB RAM
  • Ubuntu OS – steps are tested on 12.04

Nginx has a nice module to support the RTMP protocol. But using it means we need to compile Nginx from source! Log into your box as root and follow the steps below:

Install required packages to compile Nginx

  apt-get install build-essential libpcre3 libpcre3-dev libssl-dev

Create a temporary folder

  mkdir -p ~/temp/nginx-install cd ~/temp/nginx-install

Download and extract the source of NGINX and the RTMP module.

  wget http://nginx.org/download/nginx-1.6.1.tar.gz tar -xvf nginx-1.6.1.tar.gz wget https://github.com/arut/nginx-rtmp-module/archive/master.zip unzip master.zip

This is my directory structure after:

  root@default:~/temp/nginx-install# ls -l total 1332 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 545036 Sep 7 20:27 master.zip drwxr-xr-x 8 1001 1001 4096 Aug 5 19:18 nginx-1.6.1 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 803301 Aug 5 21:55 nginx-1.6.1.tar.gz drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Sep 2 02:44 nginx-rtmp-module-master

Go to the NGINX extracted source

  cd nginx-1.6.1/

Configure with the RTMP module

  ./configure --with-http_ssl_module --add-module=../nginx-rtmp-module-master

If you wish to add the other supported modules, you can freely add them. For example:

  ./configure --with-http_ssl_module --with-http_realip_module --with-http_addition_module --with-http_sub_module --with-http_dav_module --with-http_flv_module --with-http_mp4_module --with-http_gunzip_module --with-http_gzip_static_module --with-http_random_index_module --with-http_secure_link_module --with-http_stub_status_module --with-mail --with-mail_ssl_module --with-file-aio --with-ipv6 --add-module=../nginx-rtmp-module-master

Then continue to compile and install. By default, Nginx will be installed at: /usr/local/nginx

  make sudo make install

It will be more convenient to create init scripts for the service.

  wget https://raw.github.com/JasonGiedymin/nginx-init-ubuntu/master/nginx -O /etc/init.d/nginx chmod +x /etc/init.d/nginx sudo update-rc.d -f nginx defaults

After that, we can start and stop NGINX using the commands:

service nginx start service nginx stop

Open the file: /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf and add the following contents at the bottom:

  rtmp {          server {                  listen 1935;                  chunk_size 4096;                    application live {                          live on;                          record off;                  }          }  }

Restart the server after this.

Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE)

FMLE is a free live encoding software made by Adobe. You can use this capture video and audio input from different devices and stream it to your server configured above. You can get it from http://www.adobe.com/products/flash-media-encoder.html.

Here is a walkthrough on downloading the product:

Install the software and open it. It should look like this:

You can choose and configure your video and audio device on the left. Feel free to play around. The right side contains the details of your server.
I blotted out my IP address from the screen capture. But do note of the values rtmp://xx.xx.xx.xx/live and livestream in the text boxes. You will need these in your HTML.

Click connect to connect FMLE to the server and click start to begin the streaming session

FlowPlayer

I have found good success using FlowPlayer for rendering my video streams on a browser.

Here is the relevant HTML/Javascript code that shows the stream from the broadcast made by FMLE above:

  $f("wowza", "http://releases.flowplayer.org/swf/flowplayer-3.2.15.swf", {      clip: {          url: 'livestream',          scaling: 'fit',          live: true,          autoPlay: true,          provider: 'hddn'      },      plugins: {          hddn: {              url: "flowplayer.rtmp-3.2.11.swf",                  netConnectionUrl: 'rtmp://xx.xx.xx.xxx/live'          }      },      canvas: {          backgroundGradient: 'none'      }  });  $f("wowza").play();

And this is output when the HTML page was opened on a browser:

To save you the trouble of finding the right combination of swf files and HTML code, here is the complete zipped html client package.

Final notes

I want to thank @ihatetonyy of LET who helped me a lot with my research on video streaming.

Mihai, from XTServers, has sent in an exclusive offer for a 2GB OpenVZ VPS in Canada. The coupon for this price has only 15 uses, so be quick to grab one!

  • 2GB RAM

XTServers has been in business for over five years. All their VPS are DDoS-protected. With them offering France and Canada as locations I assume they are using OVH as their dedicated server provider. IPv6 is coming soon and all server will get 5x IPv6 for free when that happens. If you switch from another provider (and can provide proof of that) you qualify for a 5% discount. XTServers do not oversell, claiming to keep about 8%-10% spare resources on each host node. Support is available in English, German, and Romanian. Included with the above server is 10GB backup space.

Payments can be done via PayPal. There is a three-day money back guarantee so you can safely give these guys a shot. Additional IPv4 are available for €1.50/month (which should be around $2). Please read their Terms of Service before putting in an order.
