Top Provider Poll 2014-Q3 — The Results

Top Provider Poll 2014-Q3 — The Results

Tags: topproviders Date/Time: October 28, 2014 @ 1:00 pm, by Maarten Kossen

Ladies and gentlemen: once again the moment has come! The votes have been counted and the results have been checked. The results for the Top Provider Poll 2014-Q3 are here!

First of all, let me thank you all for voting! This poll is not possible without our appreciated members who takes the time to vote and share their opinions about the providers they love. Just like the last three times, people had five votes to divide. They could give them all to one provider, divide them amongst providers, or give five providers one vote. This has proven to be a popular system for all members.

This is, however, the last poll as we know it now. It has commercialized into another ad spot for providers and that's not what the poll is for. Changes are up ahead to make the poll more interesting and more refreshing. More about that in the final notes.

On to the results. By continued popular demand, I have listed the top 10 right here! I have picked offers for the top 3 providers from their website; numbers 4 to 10 are mentioned without an offer.

And the winner is…

1. RamNode (127 votes)

RamNode wins yet another Top Provider Poll. I must say, they are quite unbeatable having held the top position for quite a while now. Nick and his team have been running a stable business for a while now and have continued to do so the last quarter. They have recently expanded to New York City, bringing their total number of locations up to four. They also recently overhauled their offering, increasing disk space and lowering their prices (and no more coupons). This remains one of their most popular offers, combining a load of disk space with SSD-caching and a decent amount of hardware:

  • 1 CPU core
  • 128MB RAM
  • 64MB vSwap
  • 80GB SSD-cached HDD space
  • 500GB traffic
  • 1Gbps uplink
  • 1x IPv4
  • /64 IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • Price: $15/year
  • Order in Atlanta
  • Order in New York City
  • Order in Seattle
  • Order in The Netherlands

2. Nodisto IT: Winity.io, Backupsy, VPSDime, Cloudive, Virtora (102 votes)

Oktay has also been around for a while. He launched Winity.io last year, where he sells affordable Hyper-V based Windows VPS. But he is best known for Backupsy, his brand that gives you a lot of disk space for very little dollars. VPSDime is also unique with they big-bang-for-buck offers. Recently, they started offering free backups and offers with a 10Gbps uplink, within LEB pricing!

3. Prometeus (85 votes)

Prometeus, who doesn't know them by now? Or better yet, who doesn't have a server with them? While they already have various brands that complement each other and iwStack (the affordable cloud), Salvatore added Xen Power to the mix late 2013 to broaden their empire of awesomeness. Another Top Provider Poll with Prometeus in the top 3 means that are doing it right (I can personally attest to that!)! Recently, a XenServer-based zone was added to their iwStack brand, which enables you to (for example) build a server like this:

  • 1 vCPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 20GB SAN disk space
  • 1.5GB traffic/hr
  • 1Gbps uplink
  • 1x IPv4
  • /64 IPv6
  • XenServer/CloudStack
  • Price: €3.60 ($4.58)/month
  • Order in Milan, Italy
  • Minimum sign-up credit purchase of €30 required. VAT included.

4. Crissic Solutions (62 votes)

Skylar has been working hard to make Crissic popular and he has succeeded! He's been in the upper part of the poll for the third time in a row now. He is known for his competitive offers and his hard work. He owns all his hardware and equipment in his rack in Jacksonville, Florida, but also his IP addresses. Recently Skylar announced Crissic's expansion to Los Angeles, which deserves our congratulations!

5. DrServer (50 votes)

DrServer is another wizard when it comes to being a good provider. With his unique brands and even more unique web designs he is quickly gaining popularity in the LowEnd market, but I believe also in the VPS market in general. Last time they came in seventh, but they've definitely made a jump up this time. Their focus is on Xen and they have several brands, among which is AbusiveCores, which gives you a dedicated CPU core for a LEB price. An interesting addition to the DrServer empire is Dirt Cheap Ninja, where the server pricing starts at $0.50/month, paid per month! If that isn't cheap…

6. MyCustomHosting (31 votes)

MyCustomHosting is know for their cheap but resource-packed KVM servers in Canada. It's a pleasure to welcome them to the top 10! Phil has been working hard to build MyCustomHosting as a successful business and has hit a few bumps down the road, mainly because of the challenges OVH brings with regards to networking. He has conquered those challenges, though, and brought his business to the next level. So, if you need a proper KVM in North America/Canada, MyCustomHosting is a good choice!

7. BuyVM (23 votes)

BuyVM has been riding the top 10 solidly for the past three polls! Another established LowEndProvider, BuyVM, comes in seventh! BuyVM has recently initiated an upgrade of their servers, giving everybody free upgrades to SSD space. On top of that, inbound traffic is now free as well as nightly backups. That is on top of the ongoing improvements they are doing to their in-house panel, which is said to be getting a custom-coded billing part as well. Last but not least, they're branching out to Luxembourg, becoming one of the few, or only even, LEB providers in that country…!

7. Digital Ocean (23 votes)

DigitalOcean is known for their rapid-to-deploy boxes and their pay-as-you-use model. With an SSD KVM VPS for just $5/month in the USA, The Netherlands, the UK, or Singapore, they do indeed have competitive offers! Various templates are available in order for you to rapidly deploy a specific application, all within their custom panel.

7. Inception Hosting (23 votes)

Anthony launched LowEndSpirit last year: a real LowEndBox for just €3.00/year is just awesome!! LowEndSpirit is currently available in six locations world-wide, with Japan and Australia having been added recently (Australia is provided by Ransom IT). Inception Hosting itself has been running quite solid as well, with Xen-PV servers in 4 locations world-wide! On top of that, Anthony now offers OpenVZ boxes in Miami as well.

10. Catalyst Host (20 votes)

Catalyst Host is a first-timer in the Top Provider Poll, for which I would like to extend my congratulations! We all know Catalyst Host very well from LowEndTalk. It was started by friends Ryan and Jarland, with Jarland taking a step back next year and Ryan getting assistance from Don. Catalyst Host is known for their transparency and sane offers.

Final note

This concludes the listing of top provider for this poll! Again, thank you all for voting and enjoy these amazing offers!

As I mentioned in the introduction, we'll be making some changes to make the poll more interesting. I'm not going to share all details yet; some ideas still need to be ironed out. What I can say, though, is that there's going to be more than one "top" next time, and the poll will be held twice a year… For more details, keep an eye on LowEndBox and LowEndTalk for the next two months!

Alexander, from VirtNetwork, has sent in their first ever offer to LowEndBox. These offers are exclusive to LowEndBox and cannot be found elsewhere.

Classic
  • 2GB RAM
  • 12 CPU cores
  • 110GB HDD space
  • 5TB traffic

  • 3x IPv4
  • KVM/SolusVM

The 'Classic' plan has limited stock available.

We all know Alex from his time with other providers, most notably GVH. This time, he's giving it a shot himself. He aims to provide 'amazing services and support' while keeping 'affordable prices' according to his ticket. There's some serious guarantees that come with that: 60-day money back , 100% satisfaction , 99.9% uptime, non-oversold disk or RAM, non-blacklisted IPs at the time of purchase, and 24/7 technical support. The host node packs two Intel Xeon X5650 CPUs, 96GB of RAM, 4x 3TB Western Digital hard drives in RAID10, backed up by an LSI RAID card, and a 1Gbps uplink. Servers are with ColoCrossing in Buffalo. If you give VirtNetwork a try, please share your experiences with us here in the comments or at LowEndTalk.com!

Payment methods accepted are PayPal and Credit Cards through PayPal. As mentioned before, there's quite some guarantees they give, but nonetheless you should read their Terms of Service before you order!

Feathur is an Open Source (AGPL V3.0) control panel for OpenVZ and KVM and is available on GitHub. BlueVM Communications LLC are based in Honolulu and are dedicated to offering "low cost, high quality Virtual Private Servers (VPS)". We have featured BlueVM quite some times since early 2012 and reviews have been mainly positive. After they had enough of SolusVM after numerous security incidents, BlueVM decided to write their own panel. Feathur is the result of that. It's already in use at BlueVM (and has been for a while) but it is also available to the public and I believe other providers have started using it as well. Their hardware primarily consists of Intel E3-1240 servers (@ 3.4GHz) with 32 GB of RAM and 4 x 1TB or 2TB hard drives in RAID10. A review of their service (which includes Feathur screenshots & serverbear link) can be found here.

BlueVM accept PayPal, Google Checkout and Bitcoin via Bitpay. Due to abuse of their previous refund policy, they no longer offer refunds on their services except in special cases. They provide a 99.99% uptime guarantee and provide service credits if they fail to meet this. According to their website, they undersell (typically they leave 500GB of HDD space free and 2-4GB of ram free). For more information, have a read of their Terms of Service.

Marty, from Atlantic.Net, told us that they have recently added two new locations to their Cloud servers. These are Dallas, TX and Toronto, Canada. These Cloud servers are powered by SSD RAID protected drives, and you can be up in 30 seconds! Something that I find useful for dev's who like to test out their code is their pay-as-you-go billing system, where you pay per second, an industry's first, and only for what you use. Atlantic.Net is a private S Corporation, which has been running for 20 years. They have been listed once before, and there were a mix of responses. If you tried them, or have any comments, please leave them below.

Go
  • 256MB RAM
  • 1vCPU
  • 10GB SSD Diskspace
  • 1TB Outbound Bandwidth
  • Unmetered Inbound Bandwidth
  • 1 IPv4 Address

XSmall
  • 512MB RAM

  • 20GB SSD Diskspace
  • 2TB Outbound Bandwidth
  • Unmetered Inbound Bandwidth
  • 1 IPv4 Address
  • $4.97/Month

Atlantic.Net accepts payments only from major credit cards, such as visa, master card, discover, and american express. A small list of activities that are not allowed to be run on their network includes: using the server for CDN services, running Torrents or Seed Servers, TOR, crypto currency mining/generating, IRC or IRC bots. I usually like advise potential clients, to read through Atlantic.Net's acceptable usage policy, and their terms of service document.

Frixel Solutions LLC is a registered company in the state of Oregon, USA. While their WHOIS is private, their details can be confirmed at the website of the state of Oregon right here. According to this information they have recently registered, so let me welcome another new provider to LowEndBox. The bandwidth for these servers is pure HE for now, but Level3 will be added soon, according to Michael. Frixel Solutions owns the servers they have in this unique location. CPU speeds and age of components may vary per server, but you will always get at least the specs listed. As with all new providers, please be cautious and let us know your experiences!

PayPal is currently the only accepted payment methods. Servers are usually set up within 72 hours. The servers come as they are and there's no way to customize them. Finding your way on your first ever VPS – Part III

Finding your way on your first ever VPS – Part III

Tags: tutorials Date/Time: October 11, 2014 @ 1:00 pm, by Maarten Kossen

lowendtutorial

Part III of the "Finding your way on your first ever VPS" series is right in front of you right now! This time I'm going to focus on some powerful tools which can make your day-to-day life a lot easier.

I am going to assume a Debian-based distribution in my examples. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 more specifically. Most commands should work on any Linux distribution; the only distribution-specific commands are those for the package manager.

Let's get to work!

cat

With 'cat', you can print the contents of a file to the standard output, which is usually your terminal. This allows you to quickly see the contents of files without having to leave your terminal for another application. It works best with small files, for example, your resolv.conf or your hosts file. But, if you combine it with another piece of software I'll cover later on, this will be quite useful for large files as well.

Let's say you want to quickly see the contents of your resolv.conf, you type:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

You could get an output like this:

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
#     DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND — YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
nameserver 2001:4860:4860::8888
search example.net

cat was primarily designed to concatenate files, though, rather than printing to your terminal. You could, for example, cat two files and then convert those into a single file. That's for another time, though.

pipe (|)

A pipe | is not an application, but a tool. It allows you to send the output from one application to another. This is a very powerful tool which allows you to combine the power of multiple applications together.

A good example for the use of a pipe is piping the output from a certain command to 'less' so you can calmly look at it or even search through it. The command 'lsof' (which lists all the open files on a system) usually has a long output and it may be a pain to work with. If you pipe this to 'less', you can browse through it and search through it like it's a regular text file.

To do this, type:

lsof | less

Which should open 'less' with the output of 'lsof' in it. Once you exit less, the contents are lost, so this is no way to save content.

grep

grep allows you to search a file or multiple files for a pattern. grep prints every line the pattern is found in to your terminal. A pattern can be something as simple as a word or an IP address, or something as complicated as a long regular expression. In my experience it is extremely useful to quickly search several log files at once.

Say you want to find a certain domain name or IP address in a log file, you would type something like this:

grep 8.8.8.8 /var/log/syslog

The above command searches the file /var/log/syslog for the IP 8.8.8.8 and prints any lines from the file that IP address is on. But, it could also be that you want to search multiple files, or even all files in a directory. In the last case, you would type:

grep 8.8.8.8 *

Where * tells grep to use all files in the current directory (not subdirectories).

grep can also be used in combination with the pipe, so you want search through data coming from another application.

top

top is an application that shows you all the running processes on a system in a single list. Not only does it show the running applications, but also how much CPU and memory an application uses, which user it runs under, how long it has been running, and quite some other things. If you want to know the current status of your system, top is there to help you.

You can open top by typing 'top' and quit it by pressing q.

Inside top you have a lot of options, for example to sort or filter the list. There are too many option to highlight right here, so your best option is to type ? or h when in top to see the in-application help, or to use 'man top' to view it's manual.

htop

Or you can install htop, top's better alternative. To install it, type:

sudo apt install htop

Once done, you can open it by typing:

htop

You will now get to see a more colorful application with some bars at the top. htop has a more graphical display of the system's used and free resources. Better than that, it can work with your mouse and it works nicely with the F-keys as well as your arrow keys. You can easily sort the columns and you know where to go in this application. Have a look around and enjoy.

My recommendation is to always install htop on any server and it's simply a lot better than top. It may not be available on any system, however, so in those cases top is what you'll have to work with.

Final notes

For now, this is the last in the series 'Finding your way on your first ever VPS'. After having read these three tutorials and having practiced a bit, you should have sufficient information to investigate other parts of your VPS on your own.

Enjoy!

CentOS 6 and 7, the latest Ubuntu, and the lastest Debian are used as their default set of OS but custom OS may be installed upon request, for which you need to contact them. Before you order, please read their Terms of Service.

DDoS-Sentry was started about 8 months ago. Their goal is to offer a cheap but good DDoS-protected service. For these plans they utilize servers from the OVH enterprise line and not one of their budget plans. This means you get to benefit from the OVH Anti-DDoS PRO which has some small benefits over the normal version. While DDoS-Sentry are using SolusVM right now, they do plan on coming up with an integrated solution inside their billing panel. This plan would include some tools to use some of the more advanced firewall and Anti-DDoS tools OVH offers. Host nodes have an Intel Xeon E5-1620v2 or better, 64 to 128GB of RAM, 2x 2TB SATA drives in hardware RAID1, and 1Gbps uplinks. As with all new hosts, please be cautious especially when they have no SSL on their client area or a very good website…  Also, feel free to share your opinions with us here!

Payment methods accepted are PayPal and Bitcoins. Their WHOIS information is public. DDoS-Sentry does not provide any refunds, though they do offer a pro-rated account credit refund if you no longer wish to use a VPS. Please read their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before you order!

If you think that you will require a speed boost on your Storage VPS, you can pay a mere $2 to get your port upgraded to 1Gbps. PayPal is the payment processor they use, and refunds are processed on a case by case basis. Anything illegal in the United States is considered prohibited and should not be run on their network.
